Mesomap testers wanted

I need 4 or 5 testers dotted around the country for data testing please.

Areas Required:

North
South East
South West
Wales
Central

Stations required:

You must have a personal weather station, publish the data to the internet using Weather Display, Virtual Weather Station (VWS) or the Davis Weatherlink, have your own website and live in the UK

For those with Weather Display who are uploading the Clientraw file, then that is all that is required.

Those with VWS and Weatherlink, I will supply a file for you to upload at regular intervals that will contain you data. Your location will be displayed on the mesomap and there will be a link to you website on there as well.

In return for supplying your data, you will be given access to the mesomap and current conditions to use on your own website. This will hopefully increase the number of visitors to sites on the network and also increase the search engine profile and ranking of network sites into the bargain.

First station to contact for each designated area will be involved in the testing. I need the following:

* Town
* County
* Main website URL for your weather website
* Do your offer Lightning display (Boltek)
* Do you have a webcam?
* Nearby METAR for conditions (only needed for WeatherLink or VWS stations)
* The full URL for your conditions data file (varies based on weather software)

HOW TO: How to use MWF Maps

With the exception of the Weather Forecast Map, you should us GIMP to colour fill the maps where necessary.

Below is the reason why !

MSPaint struggles to handle the renders and thus leaving white spots where the fill is missing..... *MESSY *! Simply put ..... *IT can't do it!*

Image: http://www.scotweather.co.uk/images/mwf/gimp3.jpg

*Above Image edited in MSPaint*

MSPaint uses pixels to create bitmap images. Yes this is ideal to introduce toddlers to the concept of drawing on a computer... simple and straight forward and what its best used for.

The maps have been created using vector images which have been layered into one graphic. The vector graphics give a much smoother line with very little pixelisation, hence the sharper look.

To retain this look you need to use an application which can handle vector and even perhaps layered graphics.

For the purpose of just filling a map with colour then I would recommend GIMP. GIMP is a GPL Graphic Software Application and is freely available for download off the internet.
This application comes no where near the quality or functionality of either Adobe Fireworks or Photoshop but it is clever enough to handle the layered vector graphics in the maps.

If you don't have a copy of GIMP you can download it HERE (http://www.gimp.org/) for FREE.

Filling the map.png files....

Run GIMP
From the File Menu Select the option Dialogues

Then select the option Colours from the dropdown menu.

Image: http://www.scotweather.co.uk/images/mwf/gimp.jpg

Select the paint tin fill tool and then select the appropriate colour from the FG/BG Colours window.

Now you have selected the right colour using the paint tin tool click the pointer in the appropriate counties on the map to be filled.

Image: http://www.scotweather.co.uk/images/mwf/gimp1.jpg

That's it........... as you can also see the fills are of a higher quality.

Save the file to a new name..... I use something like uv080506.png which means UV forecast for 6th may 2008. But I will leave that up to you. Once saved you can then upload it to MWF.

Happy Forecasting!

***Solved*** in Question threads

Hi there i have a suggestion for the MWF team!

As you know the tech forum contains alot of questions, which goes for the weather questions etc.

Perhaps when a problem is sorted the mods etc change the title and put solved in it so we know what is solved etc.

It would come in use to say if we have the same problem, we can just look for the solved threads and make it a bit easier. Thanks, SW.

E.G Say there was a thread called 'My rain guage has broke'. Then later the problem has been solved. Then the mods etc change the title to something like '***Solved*** My rain guage has broke'

Feedback is much appreciated! Thanks, SW!
